The winners of the DCFS Essay Competition 2007 were presented with their prizes on October 3, 2007 at The Courtleigh Hotel and Suites, Knutsford Boulevard, in front of an audience comprising; teachers, students, guardians, sponsors of the competition and representatives from the Co-operative Movement.

This is the 4th year of the Competition hosted by the Department for Primary, Secondary, Junior High and High Schools throughout Jamaica.

This year’s first place winners were Ewarton Primary, Jahmeel Thwaites in the 11-14 age group and Dunoon Park Technical High School, Ifa Lalor in the 15 – 17 age group. The titles of their essays were “What are the main features of a Co-operative and how can Youths of Jamaica benefit from their involvement?” and “Is there a need for Co-operative Societies in Jamaica?” respectively.

The winners’ prizes took them and their teachers to St. Lucia and the Bahamas, where they interacted with students and co-operators on these islands, made courtesy calls on Civic Leaders, and participated in a Youth Forum.

The main objectives of the competition were to facilitate regional integration, generate higher levels of interest by the youths and help with the establishment of youth co-operatives in Jamaica. It is also expected that these visits will lead to twinning of the schools in Jamaica with the schools in St. Lucia and the Bahamas.

The other students won prizes such as; Accounts in COK Co-operative Credit Union and St. Catherine Co-operative Credit Union, Plaques and Gift Vouchers redeemable at Kingston Bookshop.

The teachers and schools were also presented with gifts and trophies. Charlemont High School received a plaque for submitting the highest number of entrants and  vowed to take the winning trophy next year, as young Jahmeel passed his GSAT Examinations to Charlemont High School.

It is expected that there will be increased involvement from schools and students for next year’s competition. The Department wishes to thank the many sponsors, students, teachers and staff of the Department who made the Competition the success it was.
