The Department in Collaboration with

Portland Credit Union Ltd

Mr. Patrick Patterson is a single parent who has been caring for his children for the past nine years.  Five girls and one boy, whose ages range from nine to seventeen, were in need of assistance.  The Department of Co-operatives & Friendly Societies upon hearing the challenges faced by Mr. Patrick Patterson and his family felt a strong need to assist in whatever way possible.

To this end, the Department commence working with Portland Co-operative Credit Union Ltd in an outreach programme to assist Mr. Patterson and his children.  The Credit Union  will be focusing on an economic venture for the father, while we have pledged the sum of Fifty Thousand Dollars ($50,000) to assist with school fees, exam fees, lunch and other miscellaneous item for the children - to be utilized in assisting in particularly Duran and Samantha Patterson. This fund will be administered by the  Portland Co-operative Credit Union.

A Presentation Ceremony was held, at the Avocat Primary & Junior High, on October 28, 2003 where Ms. Kirkland, Director of Development (Acting) applauded the efforts of Mr. Patterson in caring for his children and encouraged him to continue on this path. Concerned individuals are also encouraged to contact Portland Co-operative Credit Union for further information.

The development of these youngsters in particularly and the family unit as a whole, will ultimately result in the creation of individuals committed to the co-operative concept, as we work together in assisting the less fortunate in our country.

“It’s a People thing and together we can achieve more”
